Humans are social creatures and we communicate with others all the time. For communication to occur, we need a sender, a message and a receiver. Transmitting a message can be affected by a number of things such as:

  • The emotions of both the sender and the receiver.
  • The medium that the sender uses to send the message.
  • Individual perceptions.
  • Language barriers.
  • Cultural differences.

What are Communication Skills?

Communication skills are the skills we develop as we grow which positively or negatively affect the relationships we build with others. Communication skills are also known as interpersonal skills and include:

  • Verbal communication
  • Nonverbal communication
  • Visual communication
  • Written communication
  • Formal communication
  • Informal communication
  • Listening

We also use other soft skills as we communicate such as:

  • Confidence
  • Empathy
  • Respect

We use communication skills in our personal and working lives. Good communication skills are vital because they enable us to express ourselves clearly.
