Grief is a natural response to a major loss. Grieving may be related to:

  • the loss of a loved one in death
  • the break-up of a relationship
  • the death of a much-loved pet
  • the loss of a job
  • the loss of health

Any significant loss can cause feelings of grief which are extremely painful and difficult to deal with. A grieving person may experience shock which then turns into anger. They may feel angry with a loved one who has died, reasoning that they have been abandoned by them, however unreasonable these feelings may be. A grieving person may also experience feelings of intense guilt and remorse, as well as feelings of sadness and fear.

It is important to remember that these are normal reactions to grief. Give yourself time to grieve, and if you can, share your loss with others by talking about your feelings. You are not alone, and other people can be a great means of support. Join a support group, or if you feel up to it, engage in other social activities to keep your mind occupied. Above all, be patient and take time to rest and relax and in time the grief will lessen and eventually pass.
