The expression ‘commit suicide’ is often used when referring to people who take their own life. Along with many others we feel that this term should not be used as it implies a crime has been ‘committed’.
Throughout our website and publications we use expressions such as ‘attempt suicide’, ‘ended their own life’ or ‘died by suicide’. Terms like these are closer to the serious reality of suicide and show more respect to victims and their loved ones.
Today is World Suicide Prevention Day 2018 which is a time to focus on developing suicide prevention strategies worldwide. Life is precious and suicide is a desperate act by someone who feels living is no longer an option. But suicide is preventable and with the right help and support it is possible to turn things around and realise that life is worth living.
